Lo-Fi loops to build on

Warm, unhurried and deliberately imperfect. Tape saturation, soft keys and drums mixed a long way back.

What Lo-Fi loops usually bring

Lo-fi loops are warm, unhurried and deliberately imperfect. Loop makers bring soft keys, jazz chords, mellow guitar, muted horns or a gentle vocal phrase, run through tape saturation, wow and flutter, vinyl noise or a low-pass filter so nothing sounds too clean.

Tempo usually sits between 70 and 90 BPM, and the drums are often pulled behind the beat for a lazy, swung feel. Lo-fi borrows heavily from boom bap and jazz but is mixed softer: the loop tends to sit in the middle of the mix rather than in front, with nothing sharp enough to pull a listener out of it.

Collaborating on Lo-Fi loops

Lo-fi is often made for long listening, and a lot of it is released as instrumentals rather than with a vocal on top. That makes the loop an even bigger share of the finished record than usual, so settle how both producers are credited before release, including on the instrumental itself.

On ColabLoop, you ask the loop's owner to build on it, and if they accept, a private room opens with the full WAV to take into your own DAW. When the beat is released, both of you attest that the owner is on the split. ColabLoop records those attestations; registering the split with a PRO or distributor is still yours to do.

Lo-Fi questions

What BPM is Lo-Fi?
Lo-Fi usually sits between 70 and 90 BPM. Unhurried and swung, often with the drums pulled behind the beat. These are conventions, not rules, and nothing on ColabLoop restricts the tempo of Lo-Fi loops.
What makes a loop sound lo-fi?
Texture more than notes: tape saturation, gentle pitch wobble, vinyl crackle, soft transients and a rolled-off top end. The chords are often jazzy, and the playing is slightly loose on purpose.
Is lo-fi only for study playlists?
No. The same warm, soft sound sits under a lot of rap and R&B, and a lo-fi loop at 80 BPM can carry a verse as easily as a playlist.
